Window Safety
The warm weather may be behind us for the season, but there is still a potential danger that many people don't realize until it is too late: window falls. Please check all the rooms in your home and make sure they are safe places for your children to play or nap. As a reminder, we have affixed caution stickers (shown below) to upstairs windows of the homes. The following list may help you to determine if you have done all that you can:

♦   Teach children about the hazards of playing near an open window and make sure they understand that a screen will not stop them from falling.
♦    Never put beds or other furniture under a window.
♦    Do not allow children to stand on toys or other items to look out a window.
♦    As a precaution, you can install thumb latches (available at most hardware stores) to prevent children from opening windows on their own. A sample latch is shown below, but the device you choose may depend on the type of window you have in your home. Please contact the Neighborhood Management Office (NMO) if you have any questions or are unable to locate latches.
♦    Routinely check your screens to make sure that they are secure and if you have concerns please call maintenance. Remember: screens do not prevent falls.
♦   If you require additional safety measures for your windows, such as Guardian Angel window guards, please inquire at your local NMO:
      Naval Base Kitsap: 360.598.5831
      Naval Station Everett: 1.877.245.7370
      NAS Whidbey Island: 360.679.4241

Another potential hazard around the home are looped cords. Check the cords on your blinds and other window-coverings to make sure they do not pose a choking hazard. At the very least, keep cords up, out of the reach of small hands. Make sure all cords are free-hanging and are not looped or knotted. If you have any questions or concerns about windows (screens or coverings) please call the NMO. Hopefully discussion and awareness will prevent window-related injuries from happening in your home.
